Scholarship Opportunities for University of Illinois Undergraduates


This sheet is primarily for undergraduates seeking study abroad scholarships and is meant to help them begin to look for funds. MANY APPLICATIONS ARE DUE OVER ONE YEAR IN ADVANCE OF STUDYING ABROAD… START EARLY!

Hints for Scholarship Applications

1. Start searching for appropriate scholarships and preparing EARLY.

3. Make good use of your academic writing skills; obtain feedback, and revise all essays.

4. Ask your parents if any scholarships exist at their workplace for children of employees.

5. Look in your community— funding may be available through civic, ethnic, or religious groups. For example, former girl

Scholarships for Study Abroad: General

• International Programs and Studies Scholarships. From $300 – $1,000. ‘General Merit’, ‘Nontraditional Destination’, or ‘Underrepresented Student’ scholarships. 3.0 minimum GPA. Deadlines: October 11, 2007 for Spring ’08 and Winter Break ’08 and March 6, 2008 for study in Summer ’08, Fall ’08, or AY ’08-09. https://www.studyabroad.uiuc.edu

Illinois International Scholars. From $500 – $2,500. 3.0 minimum GPA. Deadline: Oct. 11, 2007 for Spring ‘08 and March 6, 2008 for study in Fall ’08, or Academic Year ’08-09. https://www.studyabroad.uiuc.edu

* Rotary International. From $12,000 – $26,000. Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship (3-6 months) and Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship. * Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship. For those receiving a federal Pell Grant at the time of application. Up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduates. Deadlines: October 9, ’07 for spring and April 3, 2007 for fall or AY. www.iie.org/gilman

* Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants. $1,000 scholarship for students with 30 – 90 hours of academic credit when they apply and at least one year remaining at Illinois after returning. Minimum GPA 3.5. Applications must be received at Phi Kappa Phi by February 18, 2008 for Summer 2008, Fall 2008, Spring 2009, or AY 2008-09. http://www.phikappaphi.org/

ACES Students • ACES Study Abroad Scholarship. Deadlines: April 15, 2008 for study tour ($250-$300), summer

($500), fall ($1,000), or AY ($1,500) and November 15, 2007 for study tour or winter break program

Business Students • CIBER Study Abroad Funds. From $200 – $1,000. Deadlines: April 15 for summer or fall and

CHP Students • Chancellor’s Scholars Travel Fund Award. Up to $1,000 for summer only. Contact the Campus

Education / FLTE • Bastien Foreign Language Teacher Education Scholarship. $1,000. Deadline: April 15 for fall or AY

Engineering Students • International Engineering Fellowships. $300 – $1,100. Deadline: One month prior to departure for

• Catherine A. and Bruce C. Bastian Study Abroad Scholarship. $1,000. For International Studies

majors and LAS students in the Foreign Language Teaching Program.


Scholarships for Study Abroad: Geographic Area-specific

Non-Western countries * National Security Education Program (NSEP). Up to $20,000/ AY, $10,000/ semester, or $8,000/ summer. Deadline: January 18, ‘07 for any study between May ’07-08. Other UIUC Campus Study Abroad Scholarship Opportunities

• Some organizations that arrange study abroad programs (e.g., AIFS, Butler, CIEE, IES, Interstudy, and ISA) also offer their

own scholarships. Check with your study abroad advisor.

• Many Illinois colleges and departments sponsor award competitions for excellence in a particular field of study, and not always for majors only. For more information, contact college or department offices and view their web pages.

• See campus programs (e.g., Women Studies Program) or geographical area centers (e.g., Center for African Studies) for fellowships or scholarships to do research projects or to study language and culture.
